How to sign up for Glassdoor, complete your profile and look for work

Ubuntu Canarias · 11 min read

Person using Glassdoor on a laptop, next to its features: searching for jobs, getting to know companies, reading reviews and finding out about salaries.

If you have never used Glassdoor, or if online job platforms feel difficult, this guide explains step by step how to create your account, prepare your profile, upload your CV and search for job offers. You don't need any computer skills: take each step calmly.

Glassdoor is not only for finding jobs. You can also look up information about companies, read reviews from people who work or have worked there, and check salary data. Glassdoor and Indeed are also connected, so one account can work for both platforms.

1. What do I need before I start?

Before you sign up, have these ready:

  • A mobile phone or a computer.
  • An email address you can access.
  • A password you can remember.
  • Your personal details.
  • Information about your previous jobs.
  • Your studies and courses.
  • The languages you speak.
  • Your CV, ideally as a PDF, if you already have one.

Important: if you don't have an email address, you will need to create one first. Your email and password are personal: never share your password or access codes with anyone.

2. Go to Glassdoor

You can use Glassdoor on a mobile phone, a tablet or a computer. Go to Glassdoor and look for the option to sign up or get started. Among other options, you can sign up or sign in with a Google account, an Apple account or your email address.

If you use Google or Apple, make sure you know which account you are using. You will need it to sign in again later.

3. Create your account

Follow the instructions on the screen and enter the details Glassdoor asks for. Check these carefully:

  • First name and surname.
  • Email address.
  • Password.
  • Any work information the platform asks for.

Tip: use an email address you check often. When you are looking for work, you need to be able to receive messages about your applications.

4. How are Glassdoor and Indeed connected?

This can be confusing. Glassdoor and Indeed are connected: according to Glassdoor, a synced account lets you use one login to see job offers, company reviews, salary information, the professional community, your applications and the jobs you have saved. It also lets you use features such as Easy Apply, and lets recruiters find your profile through Indeed.

What does this mean for you? You don't need to create separate accounts for each thing. If the platform offers to use or sync your account with Indeed, follow the instructions on the screen.

5. Complete your profile

Once your account is created, it's time to prepare your professional profile. Creating an account and sending applications is not enough. A complete profile shows your experience better and, according to Glassdoor, improves the job recommendations you receive.

6. Add your work experience

Include the jobs you have done. For each one, try to add:

  • Job title: for example, cleaner, waiter/waitress, kitchen assistant, shop assistant, carer, warehouse worker, administrative assistant, delivery driver, bricklayer or electrician.
  • Company: the name of the company, when relevant.
  • Dates: when you started and when you finished.
  • Duties: a short explanation of the tasks you did.

For example, for a kitchen assistant job: food preparation, cleaning the kitchen and utensils, preparing orders, supporting the kitchen team and following hygiene rules.

Tip: don't just write “Kitchen assistant”. It's better to explain what you did, so the company knows what you can do.

7. What if I have little experience?

That doesn't stop you from using Glassdoor. You can include work placements, vocational training, volunteering, experience related to the job, previous jobs and professional skills. But always use real information: never make up companies, job titles, dates or qualifications.

8. Add your education

Include the studies and courses you have completed. For example:

  • Secondary education (Educación Secundaria).
  • Upper secondary education (Bachillerato).
  • Vocational training (Formación Profesional).
  • Professional certificates (certificados de profesionalidad).
  • Training courses or courses related to a trade.
  • Occupational health and safety training.

If you have training related to the job you are looking for, it is especially important to include it.

9. Add languages

List the languages you really know: for example, Spanish, Arabic, French, English or Portuguese. If the platform lets you choose a level, pick the one that matches what you know. Don't choose a higher level than you have: it may be checked in an interview or a test.

10. Add your skills

Think about what you really know how to do and what may matter for the job. For example:

  • Computer skills.
  • Order picking.
  • Professional cleaning.
  • Food handling.
  • Caring for older people or looking after children.
  • Using tools.
  • Driving licence.
  • Customer service.
  • Construction or maintenance.

Only include skills you can prove.

11. Upload your CV

Glassdoor lets you upload your CV so it is easier to apply later, and recommends having it ready before you start applying. Before uploading it, check that:

  • It is up to date.
  • Your phone number and email are correct.
  • Your work experience is included.
  • Your important studies and courses are included.
  • It has no major spelling mistakes.
  • It is easy to read.

Recommendation: save your CV as a PDF with a simple name, for example CV_Name_Surname.pdf.

12. Prepare a good CV

Glassdoor recommends that your CV includes clear information about your contact details, your professional profile, your skills, your work experience, your education and anything else useful for the job. It also advises adapting it to each job offer and using words related to it.

For example, if you are looking for work as a warehouse worker, your CV should show, where it applies, experience or knowledge of warehouse work, order preparation (picking), loading and unloading, stock control, forklift driving or logistics. This is not about making up skills, but about clearly explaining the ones you have.

13. Search for a job offer

Once your profile is ready, you can start looking for work. Go to the jobs section and type the job you are looking for: for example, cleaning, waiter/waitress, shop assistant, warehouse worker, delivery driver, customer service, administrative assistant, carer, electrician, bricklayer or receptionist.

14. Search by location

Location is especially important. If you are looking for work in Gran Canaria, you can choose places such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Arucas, Gáldar, Agüimes, Ingenio, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogán or Teror. Choose an area where you can really work or that you can travel to.

15. Use the filters

Filters help you reduce the number of offers. Depending on the options available, you can filter by location, job title or category, working hours, company, salary and type of work (on site or remote). Use them to find offers that fit your situation better.

16. Read the whole offer

Before applying for a job, read the whole offer, not just the job title. Check:

  • Place: where is the job?
  • Hours: can you work those hours?
  • Contract: what type of contract do they offer?
  • Experience: do they ask for experience?
  • Training: do they require a qualification or certificate?
  • Licence: do you need a driving licence?
  • Languages: do they ask for any language?
  • Salary: is there information about pay?

17. Research the company

One thing that makes Glassdoor different from other platforms is that you can look up information about companies before you apply: reviews and ratings from their staff, and information about culture, diversity and inclusion, work-life balance, pay and benefits, and career opportunities.

But remember that reviews are individual experiences: not everyone experiences working at a company in the same way. It's a good idea to read several reviews and also check other sources, such as the company's official website.

18. Check salary information

Glassdoor also offers salary information for some jobs and companies, which you can use as a reference. Keep in mind that salaries published online are only a guide. The real pay can depend on the collective agreement, the job category, your experience, the working hours, the type of contract, the company, extra payments and the location. A published figure does not guarantee what you will earn.

19. Save a job offer

If you find an interesting offer but don't want to apply right away, you can save it and look at it again later. This is useful when you are comparing several offers.

20. Apply for a job

When you find an offer you like and you think you meet the requirements, read it all and look for the option to apply. Some offers show “Easy Apply”, which lets you apply from the platform itself. Others take you to the company's website to finish your application there.

Please note: not all offers work the same way. You may apply directly from Glassdoor, Indeed may open, you may be taken to the company's page, or you may be asked for more information. Follow the instructions for each offer.

21. Before you press “Submit”

Do a final check:

  • Have I read the requirements?
  • Are my phone number and email correct?
  • Have I chosen the right CV?
  • Can I get to the workplace?
  • Can I work the required hours?
  • Do I have the training and experience they ask for?
  • Have I answered the questions correctly?

If everything is right, send your application.

22. After you apply

The company may call you, email you, invite you to an interview or ask for more information. You may also not move forward in the process. Not all applications get a reply, so it's important to keep looking and apply to other offers that suit you.

23. Keep your profile up to date

Don't create your profile and then forget about it. If you do a new course, add it. If you get a job, update your experience. If your level in a language improves, change it. If you get your driving licence or a certificate, include it. That way your profile will better reflect your professional situation.

24. Mistakes to avoid

  • Creating an account and leaving your profile empty: fill in as much useful information as you can.
  • Uploading an old CV: always check that it is up to date.
  • Making up experience: never invent jobs or duties.
  • Making up languages: give your real level.
  • Applying to any offer: first check that it suits you.
  • Not reading the conditions: look at the hours, location, requirements and type of contract.
  • Using an email you don't check: you could miss an opportunity.
  • Having the wrong phone number: check that the number is written correctly.
  • Paying to get a job: be wary of anyone who asks you for money in exchange for a so-called job.

25. Staying safe while looking for work

When you look for work online, protect your data. Never share:

  • Passwords.
  • Verification codes.
  • Bank details that are not needed.
  • Photos of your bank cards.
  • Money to get a job.
  • Personal documents with people whose identity you have not been able to check.

If an offer seems strange or someone asks you for money to hire you, stop and check the information before going any further.

26. Is Glassdoor free?

According to Glassdoor, it is free for job seekers to search for offers and look up information about companies, salaries and the community. If you are offered any extra paid service, check exactly what you are paying for before you accept.

27. Not all offers are the same

Just because an offer is published on a job platform does not mean it is right for everyone. Before you apply, check the job, the requirements, the location, the hours, the contract, the salary and the duties. That way your job search will be more organised.

28. A tip from Ubuntu Canarias

Looking for work online can be hard when you are not used to these tools. You don't have to do everything in one day. You can go step by step:

  1. Create your account.
  2. Fill in your details.
  3. Add your experience.
  4. Add your education.
  5. Upload your CV.
  6. Search for offers.
  7. Read them carefully.
  8. Apply to the ones that really suit you.
  9. Save the interesting offers.
  10. Check for new opportunities from time to time.

Glassdoor can be a useful tool for finding offers and getting to know companies better, but it does not replace checking the information yourself. Before accepting a job, always check the conditions the company offers and, when possible, compare them with official sources.
