COMPASS Project: Observatory of Human Mobility between the Canary Islands and Africa

Ubuntu Canarias is part of the COMPASS Project's technical and institutional Collaboration Network · Last updated: July 2026

🌍 What is the COMPASS Project?

The COMPASS Project falls under Priority 4-MAC of the Interreg MAC 2021-2027 Cooperation Programme, co-financed by the European Union. Its main goal is to articulate cooperative and sustainable solutions to irregular migration flows, addressing migration management jointly from both origin and destination —the Canary Islands, Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania—, with particular attention to the protection of human rights and the prevention of loss of life during maritime crossings.

  • 🤝Sustainable solutions and international collaboration between administrations on both shores.
  • 🏥Healthcare for people on the move.
  • 🧒Specific support for unaccompanied minors.
  • 🎓Vocational training that opens up real opportunities both at origin and at destination.

COMPASS understands migration as a phenomenon that is managed better when origin and destination work as a network, not separately.

🤝 Technical Collaboration Network

Accredited partner entity: Ubuntu Canarias. Reception and Integration

We are part of the COMPASS Project's technical Collaboration Network, contributing our field experience in reception, socio-employment guidance and psychosocial support for migrants in the Canary Islands.

👥 Ubuntu Canarias' role in the Network

At Ubuntu Canarias, our President Soraya Mohamedi Mohamed, together with the association's team, actively takes part in the Network's working spaces, seminars and technical analysis. These include specialised training on the practical implications of the New European Pact on Asylum and Migration along the Atlantic axis, delivered by specialists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).

  • 💻The COMPASS Network's technical intranet and specialised working seminars.
  • 🧭Direct support for migrants, both at origin and at destination, drawing on accumulated social intervention experience.
  • 📋Monitoring of European regulatory developments, in particular the New European Pact on Asylum and Migration, and its application to the Canary Islands–Gambia–Mauritania–Senegal corridor.

«Being part of the COMPASS Network reinforces Ubuntu Canarias' commitment to a rigorous, collaborative and deeply human approach to reception on our islands.»

Soraya Mohamedi Mohamed — President of Ubuntu Canarias

This participation strengthens the networked approach that Ubuntu Canarias champions as a guiding principle: reception and integration work best when the entities operating at origin and at destination share information, resources and strategy.
