Ubuntu Canarias at the Peruvian community's Fiestas Patrias

Dance, food, traditional costumes and whole families sharing a space that, for a few hours, was filled with Peru.
This past Sunday we were at the Fiestas Patrias celebration of the Peruvian community in Las Palmas, with Ubuntu Canarias, together with the Hatun Llaqta community.
There's something that always strikes us about these kinds of celebrations: the sheer energy people put into keeping a tradition alive once they no longer live in the place where it was born. It isn't nostalgia — or not only that. It's a way of saying “this is still mine,” in a context where, often without saying it outright, people are asked to stop being who they are.
Throughout our work we've seen that real integration isn't about erasing where you come from — it's about being able to hold both at once: the place you're from and the place you now call home. When that happens, something settles at a personal level too.
Sundays like this one are a good reminder: we felt at home too.
Thank you to the Peruvian community and to Hatun Llaqta for opening their doors to us and letting us be part of the celebration.
