Uruguay's Independence Day celebration in Cruce de Arinaga
Published: August 2, 2026
Music, candombe and Uruguayan flavour: the Uruguayan community in Gran Canaria invites the whole island to celebrate the Declaration of Uruguay's Independence together, free entry.
On 22 August, from 8:00 pm, Plaza 1º de Mayo in Cruce de Arinaga will turn sky blue and white. The association Uruguayos en Gran Canaria is organising an evening of live music, food and tradition to celebrate the Declaration of Uruguay's Independence, with free entry for everyone.
The line-up includes the national anthem performed live by the Agüimes Municipal Music Band, murga singing, Murga La Oriental, Uruguayan rock from Che Bo Bo, candombe from Raíces del Candombe, and cumbia and plena from Korias con K. The event is supported by Agüimes Town Council, Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Consulate General of Uruguay in the Canary Islands and Uruguay's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with local businesses and families from the Uruguayan community on the island.
At Ubuntu Canarias we like joining in with gatherings like this one, because at heart they're community making itself visible: people who chose to build their lives here and who, at the same time, keep carrying where they come from with pride. We think that double belonging deserves space, and deserves to be known.
If you live in Gran Canaria, we'll see you on 22 August in Cruce de Arinaga. Free entry, for the whole family.
