Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE)
Registering as a jobseeker is free and gives you access to job offers, guidance and many courses, because quite a few free training courses require you to be registered.
- Website of the Canary Islands Employment Service
- How to register as a jobseeker
- Job applications and offers
- SCE job search, which you can filter by island and municipality
- SCE apps for Android (direct download): appointments, your registration and job offers from your phone
- Create your CV with the SCE
- Working in Europe (EURES) at the SCE
- Career guidance
We also explain it in our guide Looking for work in the Canary Islands?.
Some tips so that the SCE takes you into account when job offers come in:
- Book an appointment through the online office, the SCE app or by calling 012 (928 301 012).
- Choose your occupations carefully. You can list up to 6. The SCE looks for candidates through them, so they must match what you can do.
- Extend your search area to the whole island of Gran Canaria if you can travel. You ask for this at your employment office.
- Keep your registration up to date and hand in the certificates of the courses you take.
- Ask for the employment plans and the PFAE. The SCE's agreements with town councils and organisations often hire people for cleaning, labouring, gardening or maintenance. PFAE (training programmes combined with employment) last about 11 or 12 months: you work with a contract while you train, and at the end you get a professional certificate. Both applications are valid for one year; after that you have to apply again.
- Apply for the «Servicios para el Empleo» if they apply to you, always before you are hired, because they give support to the company that hires you: Certifícate (if you have a professional certificate), Retorno al Empleo (if you have been registered for 12 months or more) and Incentívate (aged 16 to 29, with Youth Guarantee). You apply on the SCE website.
Youth Guarantee (if you are under 30)
If you are between 16 and 29 and not working or studying, you can register for the Youth Guarantee (Garantía Juvenil) to access job offers, internships and training. Information on the SEPE website and at Gran Canaria Joven, from the island council (Cabildo). Other resources for young people:
- Activa Joven Canarias, the SCE's site for young people.
- Talento Joven from the Chamber of Commerce, with guidance and training for young people.

It offers free guidance, help with your CV, workshops and a job bank with offers from private companies. Appointments: 928 446 609 · 928 448 754 · 928 448 750 · im.ef@laspalmasgc.es

An important point: to be a civil servant (funcionario/a), in most cases you need Spanish nationality or that of a European Union country. But foreign nationals legally resident in Spain can apply for contract staff (personal laboral) positions in public administrations on equal terms with Spanish nationals. This is set out in article 57 of the Basic Statute of Public Employees.

If you are already working without papers, you have the same employment rights and you can report abuse.

At Ubuntu Canarias we collect job offers in Gran Canaria every week and publish them by sector, in five languages, on our weekly job board. Every day we also share job offers, free courses and resources in our WhatsApp group, and on Free training we gather courses with open registration.
↑ Back to contents15How to spot a fake job offer
Fake job offers also circulate online. Some are after your money and others after your personal data. Be suspicious if:
- They ask you for money to work: for a course, materials, a uniform or «administration fees». A real company does not charge you to hire you.
- They hire you without an interview or offer you a job you had not applied for.
- The salary is very high for an easy job, with no experience and from home.
- They ask you to call numbers starting with 803, 806, 807, 905 or 907, which are premium-rate.
- You can't find the company online or they write to you from a free email address such as Gmail on behalf of a large company.
- They ask for your bank details or photos of your ID before you have signed anything.
- The offer doesn't give the company's name or the municipality and only gives a number to message «privately».
If an offer looks suspicious, don't send money or data, search online for the company's name and a few phrases from the ad, and warn the page where you saw it. Spain's National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) explains more warning signs on its page about fake job offers.
And before accepting any job, go through our list of 10 things to check before you say yes. If you are already working without a contract, read what you can do.
